Info refinery #19: Wandering around
I am at "homelidays" at the moment, which has let me read all the articles in my read-later apps and youtube watch later list. What a weird feeling to have those inboxes empty.
đ§ Whatâs on my mind
Mind-wandering was the topic we discussed yesterday in the Nesslabs meetup. The Neeslabs zoom calls are packed with amazing individuals and are pure food brain.
One of the ideas discussed was how mind-wandering is risky from the evolution perspective since being lost in thoughts makes it more difficult to be aware of your surroundings. Makes sense, is difficult to get to that state if you are stressed or not feeling safe.
Mind-wandering is a unique state, ideas are connected, new ideas fly around, you get to more questions, to dig deeper into something. Doesnât mean that you will get an answer to your questions likely, but rather expand and get deeper into them.
All this got me thinking about how I donât get into this state as much as I would like, many of us have the bad habit of spending too much time consuming (social media, Youtube, Netflix, âŚ) instead of engaging in activities that might lead to more thinking (such as: running, cooking, walking,âŚ). The insights during those sessions could be great to clear your mind, to launch new ideas. But then we come to another issue: How to remember what you were wondering about once you are out of the zone?
It is a totally different state of mind, and details ideas are lost as soon as we are out. A bit of friction could put those ideas into a place where they never come back. That is why I would love to have a fitness tracker/smartwatch in which I could press a button and talk to it. And the output would be a transcribed text in my notes app inbox. Would love to hear from you if you know how to do this!
𤯠What I have learned this week
Reflection rituals: We often finish a big project and donât stop to reflect on it. Lauren Valdez proposes to do completion rituals. It might have some religious connotation but a ritual is just a series of steps or practice. (link)
Digital KonMari: Nate writes about the need for space in our digital environments to spark creativity. âLike fire, our creative ideas need oxygen; fresh air to breathe life into.ââ (link)
The game day: We could approach work as top-athletes, by setting the environment to give your best in the game day, when you are ready to do your top tasks and concentration is 100%, to produce a world-class output. (link)
đŽ Interesting things
Get rich (easy?): Semi-humorous short blog post about how âeasyâ is to get rich. (link)
Missing the office?: Feel like you are in the office from home with this office ambiance sound machine. (link)
Home is everywhere: Interesting format to explain an increasingly common problem in the globalized world, how to answer: where is home? (link)
đ´ Food for thought
"There is one path in the world that none can walk but you. Where does it lead? Donât ask, walk!"
